Turn Your House Into A Home

A fully furnished house isn’t a home without some love in it. But when I say love, I mean warmth – not necessarily the happily married couple stuff. (Although it can surely consist of that too!) What I’m talking about is the difference between a warm house and a cold house.

Have you ever walked into someone’s house and instantly felt bad vibes? Maybe the place was as clean as a whistle, beautifully decorated and peacefully quiet, but something didn’t feel right? That unsettling feeling has nothing to do if whether or not a married couple, single person or some College room mates live there. What it does have to do with is the type of energy that the people who are occupying the space have. On the other hand, there are some homes that instantly uplift your spirits the second you walk through the door! It doesn’t matter if it’s in a one bedroom apartment, a loft, a  brownstone, a town house or a mansion. What does matter is the upbeat & cheery attitude of the host or hostess that’s living in the environment.

Having great home decor is only half the battle of creating the perfect love nest for yourself. But where the real work comes in is how you – the host – feel about yourself. You see, your energy will determine the overall climate of the home. Regardless of how big or small your budget is, what condition your furniture is in, what zip code you’re residing in is, and whether or not you own or rent the space, what matters the most is how you feel when you’re there.

Do you feel like playing great music while cooking your favorite dish? Do you happily microwave a bag of pop corn and anticipate watching a good TV movie? Do you look forward to inviting friends over for laughs & good times? Are you able to dim the lights to concentrate on your studies? Or do you feel lost and unsettled inside of a chaotic environment?

House or Home?

Your home is a reflection of how you feel inside.

The roof over your head should be your sanctuary away from the world. When you need to rest after a long day from work, eat a healthy home cooked meal or just let out a good cry after having your heart broken, your home should be… should truly be… home sweet home.

What are some of the ways to turn your house into a home?

  • First, look inside. Are you in an unhappy marriage? Are you living below your means or above your means? Are you living with an intolerable room mate who oversteps your boundaries? Be honest with yourself. If you’re not in the right mental space then nowhere you live will make a difference.

  • Secondly, be brave. What changes do you need to make? Do you want more money? Have you thought about having a career change, seeking a better job or working harder for a promotion? Do you want to meet new people? Maybe get on a plane and go somewhere you’ve never visited before? Before you change your home, maybe you need to change yourself. And when you do, you might want to move to an entirely different neighborhood, borough, state, or even outside of the country!

  • Third, let go! Do you hold onto old photo albums, clothes, gifts, and items that relatives or ex’s may have given to you? Sometimes our closets are so cluttered that it creates blockage. If you psychologically believe that you have no space to buy new furniture, (even if it’s just an attractive floor lamp) then you won’t buy them. Sometimes we need to let go of old furniture and items that subconsciously reminds us of people and events that no longer serve our highest good. Let go of the old and let in the new!

Your home is a reflection of how you feel inside. So if it’s messy and disorganized, it may be time to look inside and see what you’re hiding from yourself. On the contrary, if it’s too organized like that of a militant, then you might be controlling too many things instead of allowing things to fall where they may. A little complicated? It can be. But the key is balance. 'A little bit of this and a little bit of that' makes a good recipe for a fun and responsible life. Remember, passion is #1 because without it, your lifeline will look like a flat line that’s not growing. However, once you feel passionate and you’re doing all the things that your heart desires, then the home you choose will become a reflection of how you feel inside and you’ll choose the right space for your budget, you’ll love your job, you’ll love your city, you’ll love your relationships, and most importantly, you’ll love yourself!!! Thus, you’re the one who will ultimately turn your house into a home!
